Music in Indian cinema is an inseparable commodity. Right from the great old days of Cinema, songs have proven to be the soul in a movie. With the evolution of of time, music has also transformed, has become trendy and has taken many different avatars. Let us see who are the current top ten music directors in Kollywood. The rakings are based on the following criteria...

Regarded as one of the finest music directors in India, Ilayaraja has composed more than 4500 songs in over 950 films in many Indian languages. Debuting in Annakili, Ilayaraja has been in the industry for more than 30 years as a music director and has won four national awards including one for Best background score for Pazhassi Raja which was released in 2009. He is a shining beacon of hope for many budding composers. We salute the maestro before ranking the current top 10 music directors.

Another music director who never fails to make the audience dance to his tunes! His songs in Padikathavan enthralled people and so it continued in his other movies in the year 2009. With Sura, he emphasised his presence in Kollywood. His future too looks promising as he is entrusted with the responsibility of scoring the music for the Dhanush-starrer Maapillai.

He showed a lot of promise in his first movie Subramaniapuram. Pasanga was widely appreciated, though not only for its songs, and James Vasanthan had a subdued 2009. With his Easan album recently released and getting good reviews, we wonder what this talented musician has in store in the future.

Though his Ussumu larasey is gaining popularity, greater happiness awaits him when the audio of Vijay’s Velayudham and Yuvan Yuvathi get released soon.

Vidyasagar, known for his melodies, had a reasonable 2009 in Kollywood with promising albums in Peranmai and Kanden Kadhalai. After a brief stint in Malayalam, he is back in Tamil with Mandira Punnagai. He will be the toast of the town when Kaavalan’s audio gets released later this month and Siruthai gets released early next year.

To make up for it, he hit us with a bang in Kutty and Singam this year. The icing on the cake is Manmadhan Ambu which is topping the charts currently. This talented music director can be seen composing songs for the Dhanush-starrer Vengai in the future.

His latest offerings Va and Aadukalam have captured the listener’s hearts and are sure to ensure the same in the future in movies like Maruvan, Vada Chennai and Deiva Magan.

Goa, Paiyaa, Thillalangadi, Naan Mahaan Alla, Boss Engira Bhaskaran are a rage among the youth audience. With the latest Vaanam solo song released, his diary looks too busy in the future with movies like Avan Ivan, Kadhal 2 Kalyanam, Aadhi Bhagavan, Mankatha, Vettai Mannan, Vettai and Billa 2 in the pipeline.

After delivering blockbuster hits with Ayan and Aadhavan in 2009, Harris Jayaraj went into a hiatus before emerging a winner in Engeyum Kadhal. Though this is his only album thus far in 2010, fans are eagerly awaiting his next release ‘KO’, which is directed by KV Anand. It will be interesting to listen to his tunes for his future projects, 7aam Arivu and the remake of the Hindi movie ‘3 Idiots’, to be directed by Shankar.

Since Rahman was busy with International commitments after his double-Oscar winning Slumdog Millionaire, he could not be seen in the Tamil industry in 2009. But he once again proved that he is a maestro with smashing hits in 2010. If he introduced the ‘blues’ genre to us in VTV, Raavanan and Endhiran elaborated his masterly skills yet again. Little wonder when sources claim that 2010 is Rahman’s year when it comes to music!
